Representatives from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department recently participated in a national seminar on protecting youth and a state law enforcement leadership program.

At the end of June, RBPD School Resource Officer Robert Scisco was a panelist at the National Conference to Protect America’s Children, sponsored by the Beau Biden Foundation. Scisco spoke about Building Comprehensive School Safety Plans, and Planning for Reunification and Recovery at the conference. Scisco addressed school safety policies as well as the importance of drilling with students and staff, and providing feedback that enhances those plans. He also attended several sessions related to social media safety.

Law enforcement and school personnel, attorneys, faith leaders and youth advocates were among the several hundred professionals who attended the three-day conference.

Also during the last week of June, Dustin Crago, communications specialist II, participated in the Delaware State Police’s Delaware Civilian Leadership Development program.

Crago said the program covered a variety of topics including equity theory, group cohesion, communications skills, intergroup conflict and organizational culture. “They really get you out of your comfort zone,” Crago said, adding that this was the first time in many years he’d had to deal with three hours of homework each night.

Crago said he is grateful to have had an opportunity to participate in the weeklong program. “It made me look at myself and re-evaluate myself. I learned that the definition of leadership can constantly change depending on the demands of the situation,” said Crago.
