As everyone knows, the recent snowstorm hit the City of Rehoboth Beach much harder than expected – harder than any storm many of us can remember. After several days of assessing conditions while our crews worked tirelessly to clean up, Sunday’s Polar Bear Plunge event was canceled. At the time the decision needed to be made, pulling off an event of that magnitude so soon after the storm simply was not feasible. It wasn’t an easy call, but safety has to come first.
We know how disappointing this was, especially for our local businesses, many of which count on these winter events to help get through the off-season. Even though the weather was out of our control, we understand the impact the cancellation had, and we sincerely appreciate the flexibility and resilience not only of our business community but also everyone who came to town this past weekend to attend the other events held by Special Olympics Delaware, and spent their time and money in our local establishments.
Now that the storm has passed (and hopefully the last of our winter weather with it), we encourage everyone to show some extra love to the shops, restaurants and small businesses that make Rehoboth Beach so special year-round. The weather is expected to be beautiful again this weekend, so if you come into town to walk around and enjoy the beach and Boardwalk, please consider adding a stop for a meal, a gift or to browse a local shop. It can make a big difference to our businesses – and remember, parking is free!
We also want to take a moment to recognize our city employees who worked around the clock during and after the storm. Our public works crews plowed and cleared roads in tough conditions, our emergency responders answered 911 calls throughout the storm, and even today, our teams continue to clean up debris. We could not be prouder of, or more grateful for, their hard work and dedication.
Thank you for your understanding and for continuing to support one another as we get back to normal after this historic storm.
