Rehoboth responders handle more than 50 calls during recent storm
The Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company responded to over 50 fire and EMS calls during the recent blizzard.
Officials said volunteer firefighters and career EMTs staffed all three fire stations for 48 hours with little or no sleep. Calls handled by
the crews, with assistance from Sussex County paramedics, were mostly EMS in nature including two cardiac arrests, officials said.
Fire calls involved home damage from fallen trees, house fires, gas leaks, and wires down. Downed trees and snow drifts made it difficult for units to respond, officials said.
Each ambulance was accompanied by 4-Drive fire company pick-up truck, utility trucks, and command vehicles who brought extra manpower and snow shovels to assist the ambulance crews.
Dirt Works Construction Company with its large, front-end loader helped free emergency vehicles that got stuck in the snow, officials said.
