'Religion, Spirituality and Health' set for Oct. 10 at CHHS

Harold Koenig, MD, featured at weekend events on mind/body/spirit connections

Harold Koenig, MD, will present a community program from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10,  at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. Koenig will present "Religion, Spirituality and Health: Latest Research and Applications in the Clinic and Community." The program is free, and everyone is invited to attend.

Koenig is the director of the Center for Health and Spirituality, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and associate professor of medicine at Duke University in Durham, N.C. He has published extensively in the fields of mental health, geriatrics, and religion, with nearly 400 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and 40 books in print or in preparation.

His research on religion, health and ethical issues in medicine has been featured on over 50 national and international TV news programs including “The Today Show,” ABC’s “World News Tonight,” and “Good Morning America.”  Koenig is considered one of the world’s top experts on religion and health.

The Friday evening program is the first of a series of local events Koenig will participate in the weekend of Oct. 10-12. He will be the opening presenter at an all-day Parkinson’s Symposium at 9:15 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at Epworth United Methodist Church, where he will present "Religion, Spirituality and Flourishing in Later Life." Registration is required to attend the symposium.

On the same day, Koenig will give a presentation to the Beebe medical staff between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the hospital. He will speak about religion, spirituality and health: research and clinical applications. Koenig will also have Saturday dinner with a number of the local clergy hosted by the Rev. Earle Baker from Bethel Methodist Church in Lewes.

Koenig will make a presentation on faith and health at Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes at the 10 a.m. service Sunday, Oct. 12. There will be a potluck lunch immediately after the service; the public is welcome to attend the Sunday service at Bethel and stay for the lunch.
