Renaming W. 4th Street will have huge impact

December 13, 2019

I had no problem with there being an honorary designation of 4th Street to Dr. King; however, I am outraged that this name change to 4th Street has been bullied through the council without directly involving the residents of 4th Street.

How many of those that proposed the change live on 4th?  Easy for those who don’t to force this change on us and won’t be impacted. How many of those on the petition actually live in Lewes now?

They don’t seem to care how many people, many of them seniors, will  be forced to change mailing addresses.  Here is just a short list of all the things that will be affected:

• Drivers license
• Social Security
• Insurance policies
• Medicare
• All of our retirement accounts
• Bank accounts
• Mortgages - deeds
• Medical records: Every doctor that we as older people see including hospitals
• Credit cards
• Utilities
• Cable
• Every company that bills us at our address
• Every company we buy from or use online
• All of our friends and relations

A new middle school is being built.  Why not name it after Dr. King?  How about a new road?  Those would impact no one.  To me, the council caving to this is just another attempt at virtue signaling by a rapidly gentrifying town.

I’m sure people will argue that I’d have to do this if I moved, but that’s my choice. It’s not foisted on me.
