Richard Allen Gravatt, loved dogs, trains

December 10, 2023

Richard “Rick” Allen Gravatt, 71, of Millsboro, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023 after a battle with several health issues over the past few months. He was born and raised in Wilmington, son of the late Robert Arthur Gravatt and Maude Anna (Schrumm) Gravatt.

Rick graduated from Thomas McKean High School with the Class of 1970. Growing up, he was an avid Eagles fan and more recently also a Patriots fan. Rick had several jobs in his younger days and more recently worked as a crew dispatcher for Amtrak, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He had a passion for his job and trains in general, and loved to share his love for trains with anyone who would listen. He enjoyed the outdoors, was a member of Ducks Unlimited and loved to be on the water on his boat or water skiing.  He had a huge place in his heart for dogs, and for several years raised and trained seeing-eye dogs. Music was a big part of his life as he was a longtime Jimmy Buffett fan and loved to torture his family by playing ‘60s XM Radio nonstop. He will be remembered fondly as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who always put his family first.

He is survived by his daughter, Anna M. Gravatt; son, John R. Gravatt; stepson, Nicholas Nisky; his beloved grandchildren, Chloe and Noah; and a sister, Holly Ledden. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia “Patty” Joan (Pitrizzi) Gravatt; and a brother, Edward Arthur Gravatt.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Following the celebration, all are welcome to join his family at American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro for a reception. Interment at St. George’s Chapel Cemetery in Dagsboro will be private.

Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
