Robert Ellsworth Carlton, accomplished engineer
Robert Ellsworth Carlton, 79, of Rehoboth Beach, and formerly of Rockville, Md., passed away Saturday, July 9, 2016, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.
He was born in Cambridge, Mass., April 23, 1937, son of the late Leslie Carlton and Ethel (Brodeur) Carlton.
Bob retired from 39 years in federal civil service with the Department of the Navy, experienced in engineering program management and technical specialist positions as a general engineer, civil engineer and nuclear engineer. He received many honors and awards during his career. He was a member of Registered Professional Engineers and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bob’s education included a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Tufts University, and Somerville High School in Massachusetts, graduating with honors, the Harvard Book Prize and Best Scholar Athlete (track and long-distance running). He was known as “Rapid Robert.”
Bob enjoyed photography, fishing and especially playing golf.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his children, Michael Carlton and Catherine Carlton Kennett.
Bob will be greatly missed by his spouse of 33 years, Patricia (Paletsky) Carlton; and two stepchildren, Deidre laBarre and her husband Brent Oakley, and Sedar laBarre and his wife Kimberly Sweet. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Lexi Peto, Gwendolyn Oakley, Keiran laBarre and Skylar laBarre; and a sister, Joyce Carlton McGowan.
Memorial services will be held Monday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m., at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 407 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, followed by lunch at Kings Creek Country Club.
