Robert J. Cress Jr., Coast Guard veteran

Robert J. Cress Jr. of Greenwood passed away at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019.  He was born in Darby, Pa., Feb. 2, 1952, to the late Robert J. Cress Sr. and Beulah Kelly Cress.  

He graduated from Springfield High School in 1970, and was an engineering major in the Community College of Delaware County.  Robert enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1970, honorably discharged as a gunner’s mate.  He then entered a career in HVAC. He loved his family, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.  He loved travelling and made 20 trips to the Bahamas and Jamaica, etc.   His toys were Indian, Harley-Davidson and Yamaha motorcycles.  As a “Coastie,” of course he loved boats and fishing!

Robert is survived by his long-time companion, Linda Solum; and his three children: Robert J. Cress III of Philadelphia, Pa., William Louis Adam Cress of Georgetown and Kelley Cress Zavala of Philadelphia, Pa.  Also surviving are his siblings:  Donna Cress Hornberger (Larry) of Duluth, Ga., Mary Caye Cress Bowen of Upper Chichester, Pa., and Charles Phillip Cress (Megan) of Springfield, Delaware Co., Pa.  Also surviving Robert are his two grandchildren: Mickey Zavala and Aidan Cress. Two sisters preceded Robert: Patricia Cress Widmere, and Amy Cress Fry.

A time of visitation and calling hours will be held from 10:30 till 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro.  A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. James Van Der Wall officiating. Interment follows with Military Honors at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the A.I. duPont Children’s Hospital, 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE  19803.
