Another Wilson is entering the Sussex County political arena. Robert Wilson of Georgetown is among three Republicans vying for the Sussex County Council District 2 seat being vacated by his father, Sam Wilson, who is retiring after serving 12 years.

Wilson will face off in the Sept. 15 Republican primary against Lisa Hudson Briggs of Georgetown and Cindy Green of Greenwood.

Wilson, 49, is a fourth-generation farmer who was born and raised in Sussex County. Married to Benita for 26 years, the couple has two grown children.

Wilson served two terms, from 2006 to 2012, on the Indian River school board. He owns a business he founded, Gas Tech, to assist people with their gas appliances.

Wilson, who labels himself a fiscal and social conservative, said he's running for the office because he cares deeply for the people of Sussex County and wants to protect the way of life enjoyed by its residents.

“From traffic to jobs and development, these are a few issues that we need to focus on to keep our county the golden egg that I remember and the reason people want to come here,” he said. “I'm also a firm believer in property rights and less government. With my farm background and strong social connection with my constituents, it would be my pleasure to serve on county council.”

Wilson said he's frustrated by the number of Republicans who don’t turn out to vote. He said four years ago, less than 10 percent of registered Republicans voted in the primary. He said people complain about the political power in New Castle County. “We can get control back if we just vote,” he said.

District 2 includes the communities and areas near Ellendale, Georgetown, Greenwood, Lincoln, Milford and Millsboro.
