Robinson Drive sidewalk coming in 2020
It’s been two years since the Delaware Department of Transportation proposed a sidewalk along the northwest edge of Robinson Drive outside Rehoboth Beach.
During a second public workshop Dec. 10, Matt Schlitter, DelDOT’s South District assistant maintenance engineer, said not much has changed in design or scope. He said the point of the recent workshop, held at Rehoboth Beach Public Library, was aimed at keeping people informed of the progress. The first workshop was in September 2017.
Schlitter said DelDOT plans to begin construction in the fall of 2020.
In addition to building a 6-foot-wide sidewalk, plans call for repaving the road and adding a painted center line down the middle, creating 11-foot-wide vehicle travel lanes. Schlitter said ADA ramps at corners and drainage improvements are also part of the plan.
Curb cuts will be made the length of the sidewalk for property owners to access their property. Crosswalks are planned at Blackstone Avenue and Martins Lane, across the eastern end of Robinson Drive and across Silver Lake Drive.
The cost and source of funding for the project are yet to be determined. In an email Dec. 11, DelDOT spokesman C.R. McLeod said the estimate is being revised because some time has passed since the original estimate. The source of funding will depend on the new estimate, he said.
The sidewalk would be the second measure made on the cut-through recently. In January, as part of a statewide traffic-calming pilot program called All-Way Stop Control Guidelines for Residential Streets, DelDOT installed new stop signs at the intersection of Robinson Drive and Fisher Street.
