Beacon Middle School eighth-graders recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, thanks to donated funds from Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli owner Warren Rosenfeld, the son and grandson of Holocaust survivors.
The donation covers all travel costs for 188 students, chaperones and teachers, ensuring that every eighth-grader, regardless of financial means, would have the opportunity to engage directly with one of the most significant historical museums in the country.
The museum serves as a living memorial to the millions of victims of Nazi persecution, and as a powerful educational resource for combating hatred and genocide.
“This is deeply personal for me,” said Rosenfeld. “My father and members of my extended family survived the horrors of the Holocaust, and I grew up understanding how vital it is to remember that history – and to teach it. These students will bear witness to stories that must never be forgotten.”
The field trip is intended to give students a firsthand understanding of the Holocaust’s impact, while reinforcing the values of empathy, tolerance and historical awareness. Beacon educators said the donation provides a meaningful learning opportunity for students. “This trip would not have been possible without Mr. Rosenfeld’s incredible generosity,” said Dr. Christopher Maddox, Beacon ELA/social studies teacher and trip coordinator. “Learning about the Holocaust in our classroom is one thing. Seeing the artifacts, hearing the stories, and standing in a place of remembrance – it’s transformative.”
Before the field trip, Rosenfeld was invited to Beacon to share some of his family history with the eighth-graders. “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to present my family’s Holocaust history and experiences to teachers, administrators, the district superintendent and the entire eighth grade at Beacon Middle School,” said Rosenfeld. “With funding provided by Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli, eight [Delmarva] schools in all are going to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. I can think of no greater reason to spend this money, and the joy I receive from it is immeasurable.”
