Rubert G. Long, Korean War veteran

Rubert Gerald Long, 80, of Millsboro, and formerly also of Carney’s Point, N.J., passed away Monday, June 18, 2012, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Born  April 30, 1932, in Ocean View, he was the son of the late Herman Edward and Mabel Teresa McDowell Long.

He was retired from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and was a Korean War veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a happy man, always smiling, devoted to his family, with a memory like an elephant. He loved to read, travel, and loved both camping and trips to Florida. A special part of his life was serving as a volunteer in the American Legion Post 28. He was also formerly an active member of the VFW. He served as past commander and treasurer of the American Legion Post. Earlier in life, he was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, and Loyal Order of Moose.

He is survived by his wife, Ada Rambo Long, whom he married in 1970 in Penns Grove, N.J. He is also survived by his children: Courtland Ottinger and his wife Leslie of Long Neck; Eleanor Parsons and her husband Jerry of Chester Springs, Pa.; William Ottinger and his wife Karen of Pennsville, N.J.; Shelly Gamber of Pennsville, and Catherine Guglielmo and husband Stephen of Bear. A son-in-law, Allen Gamber, preceded him in 2007. He is also survived by his brother, Lee Long and his wife Gladys of Norfolk, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A time of visitation and viewing will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 22, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. Following will be a chapel ceremony of conferring of military honors at 2 p.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
