Run & Fun Fest Pickleball event benefits Harry K Foundation

May 15, 2025

A charity pickleball tournament was recently hosted at Dave Marshall Tennis & Pickleball in conjunction with Cape Gazette's Run & Fun Fest at the Commons, a full-day festival happening in tandem at Nassau Commons. Players participated from Delaware and surrounding states. The two-day tournament kicked off May 9, with gendered doubles teams, and continued May 10, with mixed doubles. Teams competed in various brackets based on ability – 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 brackets were offered. Teams competed in round-robin tournament play, resulting in playoffs. Bronze, silver and gold medal winners in each bracket were awarded.

More than $1,500 worth of Joola pickleball gear, including paddles, bags and sunglasses, was raffled off at the event, as well as a private lesson package presented by PKLN.

In men's doubles 3.0 play, Bob Murray and Michael Poniatowski won gold, Mike Early and Tony Perez took silver, and Hari Cameron and Greg Reading took bronze. In men’s doubles 4.0+ play, Ted Deptula and Austin Carter won gold, while Steve Raffellini and Eric Gianelle took silver, and Brian Rosen and Brian McMullen took bronze. In women’s doubles 3.0-3.5 play, Pamela Coupe and Karla Bowden won gold, Susan Really and Theresa Moore took silver, and Christine Dorman and Susan Merriken took bronze.

In Saturday’s mixed doubles 3.0 50+ play, Phil Lertora and Maribeth Dockety took home gold, while Rita Magness and Mark Baillargeon won silver, and Mike Early and Susan Merriken won bronze. In mixed doubles 3.5-4.0 play, Steven Fretwell and Lisa Ferrel won gold, Timothy Hamaker and Merri-Ellen James won silver, and Christine Dorman and Matthew Wade won bronze.
