May 23, 2024

A mixed-doubles pickleball tournament was recently hosted at Dave Marshall Tennis & Pickleball in conjunction with Cape Gazette's Run & Fun Fest at the Commons, a full-day festival held at Nassau Commons.

More than 60 players participated from Delaware and surrounding states. While each team included one male and one female player, teams competed in various brackets based on ability, with 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 brackets offered. Teams competed in round-robin tournament play resulting in playoffs, and bronze-, silver- and gold-medal winners in each bracket were announced.

The event was sponsored by Artesian, Patio Systems, ChristianaCare, Selkirk, Joola, First State Pickleball, Community Bank, Catherine M. Seeber/CAPTRUST and a number of independent donors. Special thanks go to Dave Marshall for hosting.

More than $1,500 worth of pickleball gear, including paddles, bags, balls and gift cards from Selkirk and Joola was raffled off at the event.

In 3.0 play, Rosana Cohen and Jeff Cohen won gold, Michael Poniatowski and Cheri Yancone took silver, and Jeffrey Newman and Rita Magness took bronze.

In 3.5 play, Vern Rouse and Robert Solano won gold, Ken Quezada and Karla Araujo took silver, and Tom Steadman and Michelle Steadman took bronze.

In 4.0 play, Jose Hidalgo and Taylor Swain won gold, Austin Carter and Caitlin McGorry took silver, and Ray Patel and Lisa Ferrel took bronze.

A check presentation to Harry K Foundation will be forthcoming.
