More than 700 men, women and children participated in the 5K Run to the Plunge Feb. 3 in Rehoboth Beach.
It was a tight race at the top of the leaderboard, as the first four runners all finished within 32 seconds of each other. Breaking the tape was 42-year-old Zach Chupa of Hockessin in 17:03. Right on his heels were Albert Norman, 18, a Sussex Central senior, in 17:12; female winner Marina Martino of Dallas, Pa., in 17:27; and John Martino of Dallas, Pa., in 17:34.
Rounding out the top 10 were Bill Farquhar in 18:03, Mike O’Rourke in 18:13, David Wiechecki and Greg Cauller in 18:36, Brock Waughen in 18:41 and David Marshall in 18:50.
A total of 17 runners broke the 20-minute mark.
Following Martino to the finish line in the women’s race were Meredith Grossman in 21:24, Paige Haley of Lewes in 21:36, Eileen Davis in 22:08 and Leanne Carson in 22:09.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
