October 28, 2022

The 9th annual Tommy Coveleski 5K and 10K left Rehoboth Ale House along the Forgotten Mile in Dewey Beach Oct. 16, attracting 85 runners for the 5K and another 47 for the longer 10K distance.

Woody Marderwald and Pete Hartsock, former members of Rehoboth Beach Patrol, fired a cannon shot to start the race.

Proceeds from the race benefited the Sussex Consortium, where Tommy was a longtime physical education teacher.

Most of the 137 runners knew Tommy personally or were friends of a friend, and most had at some time stopped on the Rehoboth Boardwalk to read his plaque at the lifeguard shack.

Mike Sewell, 53, won the overall 5K with a time of 19:55, followed by Hank Coveleski, 25, in second 21:55. Rick Boyle, 70, won the male masters in 22:36.

Mia Thompson, 12, was first female in 23:02, followed by masters winner Lori Holdsworth, 61, in 25:27.

Bryan Mack, 32, was overall winner of the 10K in 40:28, followed by masters champion Paul Timmons, 53, in a time of 43:06.

Michelle Karsnitz, 37, was overall women’s champion in 43:08, while Sarah Richards, 38, was second in 43:14.

Jen Cawthern, 48, was female masters champion in 46:16.
