Ruth Ann Cannon, DuPont Co. retiree
Ruth Ann Cannon, nee Weer, 89, of Dewey Beach passed away in the comfort of her home Saturday, June 26, 2021, surrounded by her family. She spent her life in Wilmington, New Castle, and Dewey Beach. She was married to her love, James E. “Spike” Cannon, for 53 years until his death in 2009.
Ruth will be dearly missed by her three loving children, Karen Hart, Susan (Ed) Ortolano, and Jim (Crissy) Cannon; seven grandchildren, Sara (Matt) Kieffer, Amanda Hart, Cory (Suzanne) Hart, Emily (Stan) Taylor, Nick Ortolano, Abby and Patrick Cannon; and her seven great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Pierce, Harper, Mallory, Cannon, Savannah and Kiera. She is also survived by her sister, Josephine Hearne of Rehoboth Beach.
In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her two brothers, Jack and Bill Weer; and sister, Margaret Renberg.
Ruth graduated from William Penn High School in New Castle. She worked for DuPont before raising her family. Once her children were grown, she returned to DuPont, retiring in 1992. Ruth was also a realtor for some time. After her retirement, she and Spike enjoyed many years traveling, mostly in their motorhome, often with family and friends.
The beach, fishing, playing bridge and golfing were some of her favorite pastimes. She enjoyed taking her kids and grandkids on bike rides and to the boardwalk. Ruth was an avid reader. But above all, Ruth loved being with her immediate and extended family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, 521 Harmony St., New Castle, Wednesday, July 7, at noon. Friends may call at Krienen Funeral Home, 101 W. 6th St., New Castle, Wednesday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will take place in the adjoining church yard after Mass.
The family asks contributions to be made in Ruth’s name to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Dr., Ste 407, Newark, DE 19713.
