SAAS teams compete in Science Olympiad, Odyssey of the Mind

Science Olympiad and Odyssey of the Mind teams from the Sussex Academy of Arts & Sciences in Georgetown recently competed at the preliminary and Delaware state tournaments. The competitive academic teams spent months practicing after school to prepare for the competitions.

Two Science Olympiad teams competed in 20 events at Salisbury University March 3, earning six first-place, five second-place, and two third-place finishes. The Delaware state tournament was held at Delaware State University March 21. The two SAAS teams finished 15th and 31st out of 50 teams, winning the trophy for the top team in Sussex County.

Medals were awarded for the top 10 places for each of 23 events. The top placers were as follows:  Dynamic Planet, ninth place, Amanda Kucharzyk and Ari August; Crime Busters, third place, Abigail Davis and Ari August; Aquifers, fourth place, Ari August and Toby Ferl; Experimental Design, second place, Abigail Davis, Sara Freid and Amanda Kucharzyk; Forestry, ninth place, Colden Fees and Amanda Kucharzyk; and Bottle Rockets, fourth place, Cohen Davis and Colden Fees; and sixth place, Max Napier-Kane and Jimmy Kucharzyk.

Two teams from SAAS competed at the Bay Regional Tournament for Odyssey of the Mind held March 17 at Sussex Central High School . Both teams performed problem 5, Odyssey Angels, with the teams finishing in second (Lauren McLane, Wes Kirschner, Chloe Bartholomew, Claire Sullivan, Ari August, Brad White and Collin Sullivan) and seventh (Dana Ramirez, Samuel King, Janie Elder, Sara Ashmore, and Kierstin Blatzheim) place out of 14 teams. The second-place team went on to compete at the state championship competition March 31 at John Dickinson High School, finishing fifth in Division II.
