The SoDel Concepts restaurants, owned by Matt Haley, will feature a flight of exclusive wines from their partnership with Conti di San Bonifacio wines with a portion of the sale to benefit the Global Delaware Fund.
The Global Delaware Fund was formed in January 2011 with the goal of administering goods and services to at-risk children and those in distressing situations in Delaware and internationally. Aid provided includes food, clothing and shelter as well as counseling, scholarships and educational grants. By way of a hands-on approach, Global Delaware aims to create long-term sustainability through knowledge and education.
Haley secured an exclusive relationship with the wines of Conti di San Bonifacio, a multi-award-winning winery in the Tuscan region of Italy, when he visited in 2010. He was inspired by the methods and story of the proprietor, Count Manfredo di San Bonifacio. “I was so impressed with him and his family, and his facility,” explains Haley, “it was absolutely beautiful - it was a no-brainer.” The friendship grew, with Haley now acting as an adviser and consultant to the chef of the resort also located at the vineyard, eventually leading to a partnership that would later bring the rich heritage of Count Manfredo and his vineyard to the Delaware beaches.
The Bonifacio wines, all 100 percent organic and from the 2008 vintage, include the Monteregio, a sangiovese; the Docet, a 50/50 cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc blend; and the Sustinet, a syrah. Both the Docet and Sustinet were awarded three stars in the 2012 Gold Guide Veronelli, an Italian wine publication, with only a few hundred wines in all of Italy having earned this highest possible rating, needing a minimum of 93 points on a 100-point scale to qualify. The Sustinet was also recognized as the No. 2 syrah in the world and the No. 3 organic/biodynamic wine by Decanter Magazine, a European equivalent to Wine Spectator.
The wines are only available at Haley's SoDel restaurants, and at restaurants and liquor stores managed by Highwater Management, of which Haley is a partner. A flight of these three wines, consisting of 2.5 oz. pours, is currently at each restaurant for $19 with $2 going directly to the Global Delaware Fund. Bottles of the wines are also on hand at each restaurant, with retail sales available only at Bin 66 in Rehoboth Beach.
