Saving squirrels in coastal Delaware

September 27, 2024

In the past two weeks, I have come across several dead animals on local roads. I know accidents happen, as it has happened to me. One animal I was able to save, however, was the lowly squirrel. I find them crossing the road at the most inopportune times with no regard for their own safety.

When I lived in Connecticut, and when it was safe, I would stop my car and honk at the offending rodent until it decided which way it was going and safely arrive on the nearest pavement. Soon, I had no dead squirrel carcasses, and my squirrels were taking to the telephone wires.

Squirrels are very smart and can pass knowledge on to their kids. Some of you may remember the English program where elaborate labyrinths and traps were laid on an obstacle course before a successful squirrel could reach the treat. Many times, the squirrels only needed a day or two before they figured out the route. I found our squirrels in Connecticut to be larger with a bushier tail.  All the ones I have seen in Lewes look like teenagers. I don’t think this technique works on deer.
