Schell Brothers debuts Mug & Spoon in New Home Gallery

June 30, 2017

Schell Brothers has partnered with local entrepreneurs to bring a new sweet treat to downtown Rehoboth Beach, and it's a far cry from caramel corn, fudge and funnel cakes. Mug & Spoon, which sells milkshakes with novel toppings, along with coffee and pastries, has opened in the Rehoboth Beach-based builder's New Home Gallery at 18 Rehoboth Ave.

Mug & Spoon's menu includes fanciful milkshake creations, served in Mason jars and topped with such unexpected treats as donuts, a roasted marshmallow between graham crackers, a rich brownie, or a wedge of red velvet layer cake. Guests will need a spoon - and maybe a fork - to get to the bottom of some of these tasty concoctions.

Mug & Spoon also takes iced coffee to new heights with the addition of nitro coffee, a brew infused with nitrogen to produce a chilled coffee so crisp and flavorful it needs no cream or sugar.

From the partnership to the ingredients, the business is a local endeavor. Mug & Spoon is the brainchild of locals Aileen Hearn and Kyle Ten Eyck. Hearn's father Chip is the owner of The Ice Cream Store, which is a few shops closer to the ocean. The ice cream comes from Woodside Farm Creamery in Hockessin, whose Jersey cows produce milk with a high butterfat content. The taste makes the creamy difference at Mug & Spoon.

The New Home Gallery opened in 2014, when Schell Brothers found the perfect location just a block from the beach. But instead of a traditional gallery to showcase its new homes and communities, Schell Brothers decided to include coffee and treats that anyone could enjoy, regardless of whether they were home-shopping or not.

While waiting for their orders, patrons can use an interactive touch-screen kiosk to peruse the latest home designs in Schell Brothers communities. The welcoming environment is decorated with photographs of Schell's award-winning homes, the most popular floor plans, and an area map which showcases the location of its communities. The Wall of Happiness features photographs of employees that surround the company's written goal: "Our mission is to bring happiness to ourselves and our homeowners by not only creating exceptional homes and communities but also by providing an extraordinary home buying experience."

Along with coffee and milkshakes, the space has become a destination for those who want to see the infamous kitchen - complete with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances - that's mounted topsy-turvy from the ceiling.

For three years, patrons have turned to the coffee house for their morning cup of joe and the ability to check out Schell Brothers’ latest home designs. The recent addition of unique desserts extends the establishment's appeal throughout the day and into the evening. The location is perfect for those looking for a sweet finish after dining in one of the many restaurants within walking distance.
