Scouts construct theatrical set piece for ‘Nutcracker’ stage
The 2025 performances of “The Nutcracker” classic holiday ballet, presented by the Milford-based TADA School of Dance, will feature a special new addition – a handcrafted throne known as The Sweet Seat.
The throne was designed and built by Finn McPherson, a 10th-grader at Milford High School and a Life Scout with Troop 186, as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project. Finn began the project in June and completed it in November, culminating with two dedicated build days when Scouts, family members and community volunteers came together to construct, assemble and apply the finishing touches to the seat in a true display of teamwork and community spirit. The throne will make its debut in the Land of Sweets scene during this year’s production.
Finn selected TADA School of Dance as the nonprofit beneficiary of his project, inspired by his sister, Piper McPherson, a TADA dancer. In total, more than 150 man-hours were contributed by Scouts, mentors and volunteers to plan, design, fundraise and construct the elaborate set piece.
An Eagle Scout Service Project is a key requirement to achieve the rank of Eagle, the highest honor in Scouting. The project must demonstrate leadership, organization and service to others, offering Scouts the chance to make a lasting impact in their communities. Fewer than 6% of Scouts nationwide earn this distinction, making Finn’s work especially noteworthy.
Local Milford businesses that donated supplies in support of the project include Survey Supply Inc., 84 Lumber, Sherwin Williams and Best Ace Hardware.
Community members, Scouts and leaders who contributed to Finn’s project include Dan Martin, Kevin McPherson, Jenn McPherson, Stephen West, Carrie Huot, Mike Huot, Ryan Huot, Leo Huot, Luke Zeroles, Aidan Spatz, Patrick Spatz, Margaret Workman, Sandra McPherson, Connor Fitzgerald, Jarrod Konesey, Cameron West, Cole West, Carson West, Caden Miller, Ryan Judy, Evan Judy and Piper McPherson.
“Finn, his fellow Scouts and community volunteers have done an outstanding job bringing this project to life,” said Patrick Forey, TADA board president. “It’s inspiring to see young people and neighbors come together, sharing their time and talent in support of the arts.”
TADA’s performances of “The Nutcracker” will take place at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, and 1 and 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, at Lake Forest High School in Felton.
