April 1 may be April Fool’s Day, but a high-flying Sussex Academy lacrosse offense had no time for trickery in a 19-0 win over visiting Lake Forest, which is re-entering the varsity scene in 2026.
The Seahawks piled into the back of the net quickly and efficiently, reaching the requirement for a running clock in the first quarter. Leading all scorers were Cooper Hagy and Anthony Tattoli with five goals each. Hagy had two assists, while Tattoli registered one helper. Chase Ballinger led all playmakers with three assists, while Ty Jarrell and Gideon Sammons both had two assists. Jack Meszaros helped create a goal and Chase Watkins took part in another, giving Sussex Academy 12 assists.
“We're dialing it in,” Sammons said. “This year is different than the other years that we've been here, so you want to take every opportunity we have to succeed.”
Watkins picked up a hat trick, highlighted by a between-the-legs shot in the fourth quarter. Sammons cranked in four goals, Jarrell pitched in a couple and Ballinger also scored to arrive at the 19-goal total. It was the third straight game the Seahawks reached double digits.
“We got some younger guys that came in and allow us to move the ball, allow us to work together as a team, as a whole unit,” Sammons said.
Defensively, Sussex Academy didn’t allow Lake Forest many opportunities, but senior Jackson Hagy collected three saves, as did his backup Broden Huffman. Enrique Carbajal-Cifuentes, Cooper Lawson and Brandon Jaimes held it down as close defenders, while Sebastian Scruggs continued to be menacing as a long-stick middie.
“We really want to put our foot down,” Carbajal-Cifuentes said. “My other two D-poles, Brandon James and Cooper Lawson, are doing amazing. We’re feeling pretty confident, and these next upcoming weeks we're going to try to do what we can.”
The Seahawks take a 3-0 record into spring break. They will take the field again at 7 p.m., Friday, April 10, at Tower Hill.
