Seahawks slide into final third of schedule scorching hot
Sussex Academy won its 10th game with a 14-0 victory over The Charter School of Wilmington May 3, the day after the Seahawks sent Dover packing 18-0. Both games ended in five innings.
“We had a lot of runs and a shutout – team effort,” said coach Gerald Jester after the Dover game. “Offense, defense, and the bench came up and everybody got to contribute, so it was a team effort.”
Sussex Academy scored in nine of the 10 innings over the two games, with their biggest output coming in the third inning May 2 against Dover, when the girls scored 10 runs. Four of those came on Caroline White’s grand slam.
“I saw she dropped [the ball] when I was rounding through, so I decided that I'd go home,” White said. “I think that might be my first one.”
The sophomore’s increase in power coincides with her getting more comfortable at first base after spending her freshman year at second. Sophomore Grayce Glover has been holding down the keystone in 2025 and had three hits in both games, finishing behind junior Ryan Lowe’s four hits in the Dover game.
“I'm just going up there with the mindset of hit the ball hard and hopefully it finds a hole,” Lowe said.
Thanks to the offensive production, the starters were able to get themselves back on track, if needed, and paved the way for everyone to play a role, boosting the team’s confidence.
“Having wins like these allows us to reset and focus really hard on our offense,” Lowe said. “We're strong all around, so the girls who don't usually get as many at-bats got to get in there and hit.”
Senior Carson Gesuero started both games, while sophomore Rogue Garcia slammed the door shut in the blowout wins.
Eighth-grader Emma Orlen notched a double and a triple against the Charter School while driving in five runs for the Seahawks. Her classmate Danica Bergh had three hits in the 14-0 win.
“We broke the season into three parts, and we're getting ready to start the final part,” Jester said. “Hopefully, this is a good kickoff for the final final run.”
Sussex Academy will travel to Laurel to play the Bulldogs at 3:15 p.m., Tuesday, May 6.
