Seahawks soar past Ravens 9-1 in preseason boys’ lacrosse

Sussex Academy’s unselfish play leads to dominating performance
March 18, 2024

Sussex Tech’s lacrosse program may have started well before Sussex Academy’s, but the on-field maturity of the latter proved to be far too much in both teams’ final scrimmage of the preseason.

The Seahawks jumped on the Ravens early and didn’t look back, as Sussex Academy sailed to a 9-1 victory on the strength of selfless offense, disciplined defense and face-off domination.

“I thought we were unselfish playing team offense,” said Seahawks coach Andrew Fox. “One person would get hot, then another person would get hot. No one player was a single player out there. We spread out the offense among the team, we dominated the face-off X, which makes keeping the ball on offense a lot easier, and we stayed out of the box. All around, a great last scrimmage before the season begins.”

Scoring goals for the Seahawks were Gideon Sammons, Carter Nemcic, Cooper Hagy, Michael Hoffert and Ben Warren. Hoffert is a senior and Warren is a junior, but Sammons and Nemcic are both freshmen, while Hagy is an eighth-grader, an indication that the future, not just this season, is looking bright for Sussex Academy.

The Seahawks will open the season against Fox’s former school, Charter School of Wilmington, at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, at home.
