Seahawks soccer soars back from loss to bounce Woodbridge 7-0
It might have taken the Sussex Academy girls’ soccer team until the third game of the year to score, but a practice’s worth of shooting resulted in a 7-0 win over Woodbridge March 31.
March may have gone out like a lamb, but the Seahawks refused to leave without roaring like a lion. The lassies struck early and often, and dominated possession in the clean-sheet victory. Making the shutout all the more impressive was the fact that Woodbridge was a team striking early and often. After blanking McKean 14-0 and First State Military Academy 12-0, it was reasonable for Sussex Academy to expect a battle, but the girls handled business with poise and confidence.
Four goals in the first half and three goals in the second half made the flight path a rather easy one, but the Seahawks didn’t cut any corners to reach their total. All seven goals came off assists, and five different players scored. Sophomore Isabella Laupert-Visioli’s two helpers led the charge, while Maya Hastings, Carley Couch, Eva Taylor, Garrity Cox and Jordan Blades each got an assist next to their name.
Freshman Leah Cooper’s hat trick led all scorers. Seniors Yuvia Velasquez-Juarez and Debora Williams led by example outside of scoring, but each did collect a goal. Sophomore Addyson Bleile and Cox, an eighth-grader, also found the back of the net.
In another early-season test, the Seahawks (1-1-1) will head north to take on defending state champion Caravel Academy at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, April 2.
