Second Street Players musical ‘Oliver!’ to open July 8

Second Street Players will present “Oliver!” on stage at the Riverfront Theater during three weekends in July.

Based on the Charles Dickens novel, “Oliver Twist,” performances of Lionel Bart's classic musical are set for Friday to Sunday, July 8 to 10, 15 to 17, and 22 to 24.

The Tony and Olivier award-winning show is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members alike.

The Second Street Players production is directed by Melissa Brenner and Steven Haber, who are delighted to bring this musical theatre masterpiece to the Milford stage with assistance and amazing vision from Chris Myers, musical director, and Maria Bagley, choreographer.

The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished workhouse orphan, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance among a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured and accused of a theft he did not commit, the benevolent victim Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing for the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.

The Riverfront Theater is at 2 South Walnut St. in Milford. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows begin at 2 p.m. Seats are $25 with a $1 discount available to seniors, military, students and theater members.
