Sen. Colin Bonini files for gubernatorial race
Republican gubernatorial candidate Sen. Colin Bonini filed his paperwork July 6.
“I am running for governor because I love Delaware, and I believe the people of this state deserve better,” said Bonini in a prepared statement. He said the status quo is not working. “One-party Democratic rule has dominated our state for too long, and the result has been a crippled economy, higher taxes, increased violent crime, fewer high paying jobs, and unsustainable debt.”
Bonini has represented the 16th Senatorial District since 1994. He ran for State Treasurer in 2010, but lost to Democrat Chip Flowers.
Bonini said he wants to turn the state around and deliver a brighter, more prosperous future for its citizens.
“We can reverse the declining business climate and bring back good paying jobs that have been driven away,” he said. “We can improve education so businesses can encourage their employees to send their kids to Delaware Public Schools, instead of schools on the other side of the state line. We can stop the violence and senseless killings in many of our communities.”
As of July 7, Bonini has one Republican challenger – Laurel’s Lacey Lafferty, who filed her paperwork in March, but has been campaigning for two years.
U.S. Congressman John Carney, a Democrat, has said he is running for governor, but has yet to file his paperwork with the state’s Department of Elections.
Sean Louis Goward, a Libertarian from Dover, filed his gubernatorial paperwork May 27.
Bonini hosted an official campaign kick-off July 9 at Frazier’s Restaurant in Dover.
