Senate has committed disservice to Sussex residents

June 13, 2025

The Delaware Senate recently committed an outrageous disservice to the residents, businesses and tourism of Sussex County by passing Senate Bill 159. What a lesson in Politics 101!

Did any of the sponsors of the bill speak to members of Sussex County Council, municipal mayors or the various chambers of commerce regarding this legislation? During the Senate hearing on the matter, it was evident that no discussions were held with the elected governing body of Sussex County – its county council. The prime sponsor of the bill is from New Castle County. Somehow, Sen. Stephanie Hansen believes she knows better about what is beneficial for Sussex County than its elected members of Sussex County Council.

The Democratic members of the Senate are being enticed to vote favorably for the US Wind project. What is the enticement? All one must do is go to the campaign finance portion of the Delaware Commissioner of Elections website and follow the money trail. Funds in large amounts have been donated to both representatives and senators in the Democratic party by US Wind, thus ensuring their positive votes. It is ironic that no money was donated to Republican legislators/candidates regarding the proposed project. What happened to representing the constituents in their districts? These Democratic elected legislators appear to be more concerned with keeping their seats than they are representing their constituents.

I am quite dismayed that our Democratic senators have not listened to the residents of Sussex County and their elected council members. The voting on this legislation was strictly along party lines, which makes one wonder about the thought process of each of the senators voting in favor of this legislation. Of the five Sussex County senators, only Russ Huxtable, a Democrat who is supposed to represent the Sixth District, voted to support this legislation. Once again, he is representing his party and not his constituents.

Mayors and town councils throughout Delaware should be shaking in their boots if this bill gets passed by the full General Assembly and signed by the governor. Nothing the local jurisdictions do will be sacred. The General Assembly may swoop in at any time and override their actions.

Readers should be aware that despite what you have been told, Delawareans will not necessarily receive any electricity from the wind turbines. The only definite benefactors from this terrible legislation are those entities and politicians receiving the payoffs.
