I feel the need to respond to the letter titled “Rehoboth shouldn’t allow protest on holiday weekend” submitted by Michael Shockley in the April 25 edition.
I have attended the Route 1 wave-and-sign events and both rallies at the Rehoboth Bandstand. Having never participated in demonstrations or rallies prior, I didn’t know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the array of signs that reflect the concerns of many citizens and the energy of the crowd. And on the holiday weekend, it was so much fun seeing adults and children wearing the big, gaudy Easter bonnets.
The Boardwalk was packed with people and pets. The restaurant we ate in and the ice cream stand we visited were busy and welcoming to my group of friends, all of whom were carrying signs with various messages of concern.
In fact, to address the previous writer, I’m not sure who could feel too threatened by mainly older, predominately white men and women. And the sign waving on Route 1 brings honks of support and just a few middle fingers.
I suppose if someone is not on the same ideological page that democracy and freedom are being threatened, they may not appreciate the sentiments reflected at the rally. And, guess what? That is their right. But to mischaracterize the assembly is just plain rude.
I am not speaking out on behalf of any organization; I am speaking out because it is my right as an American citizen to do so.
