Shorebreak, Beach Jetty relocate in downtown Lewes
The new year has brought new opportunities for two downtown Lewes business owners.
When the owners of Two Friends retired last November, Maryann Barr, owner of neighboring Beach Jetty on Market Street, took over the business, continuing to offer many of their popular gift lines, but adding a beachy feel with a few primitives and antiques.
Then earlier this month, she closed her original Beach Jetty shop on Second Street and rearranged her collections among the former Two Friends shop on Market Street and her already existing adjacent shop.
With her original space available, Josh Barr, Maryann's son, moved his menswear store Shorebreak from Savannah Road, across from The Buttery, to the more central Second Street location.
Both shops are up and running.
“The response so far has been good,” Josh said. “The people stopping in this time of year are our local and loyal customers, and they all seem to be happy for us. I think it transferred over well.”
Shorebreak opened in 2009. Josh’s vision for the store at the time was to offer casual but high-quality menswear. His business plan has not changed.
“In this area, you don’t need to have anything too formal,” he said. “Casual wear definitely rules.”
Shorebreak offers a variety of menswear items, from button-ups and Ts to baseball hats, sunglasses and other accessories. Shorebreak carries Southern Tide, Woolrich, Kahala, Olukai and Costa Del Mar, among other lines. Shorebreak also offers items designed by Josh, with his signature logo – crossing fishing hooks – added to shirts and hats. He also often incorporates a sketch or design on Ts and takes old zoology prints for striper and flounder and puts them on shirts.
“We really strive to have stuff that’s unique to here,” he said. “You’re not going to find it at the outlets or at the mall.”
Vintage luggage, classic novels and historic photos are incorporated throughout the store to add to flavor to the space.
At the new Beach Jetty hub, Maryann Barr laid out her side-by-side shops in a logical manner to best use each space. The new store, in the former Two Friends spot, is exclusively dedicated to gifts, primitives and antiques, while the existing space is now used solely for womenswear.
Maryann said she is carrying all the same lines customers have become familiar with. Like Shorebreak, Beach Jetty leans more toward casual apparel, offering everything from NIC+ZOE to Spirit Football Jerseys.
Maryann opened the Second Street location in 2006 and the Market Street in 2010.
Both stores are operating with winter hours, open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about Shorebreak go to shopshorebreak.com or call 302-645-8488. For more information about Beach Jetty, call 302-644-4608 or 302-645-4606.
