In his Oct. 31 commentary, Rep. Bryan Shupe begins by saying, "As someone who reveres history, I do not use the term tyranny lightly," then proceeds to do just that by implying that elected officials who hold the majority in the Legislature are abusing power when they move forward with initiatives that they believe in.
Shupe also says, "When you look at the candidates running in the next election, I urge you not to vote based solely on party affiliation. Instead, assess them on their merits."
I agree, but the tenor of Shupe’s letter implies that you should avoid members of the majority party in order to prevent a supermajority. That is voting by party.
Perhaps the members of Shupe's party should consider the positions they espouse and what their party stands for right now. The national face of the Republican Party does matter.
I feel very lucky to live in Delaware where the elected officials have worked to protect women's rights and a living wage against a rising reactionary tide.
Be informed and vote intelligently, and don't be intimidated by politicians who use words like tyranny to misrepresent and frighten voters.
