SoDel Cares 5K, a race for a bagged breakfast

200 runners roll through five kilometers

The third annual SoDel Cares 5K, contested at Thompson Island Brewing Company in Rehoboth June 12, attracted 214 runners, joggers, walkers, strollers and dogs on leashes.  

Matt Latimer, 33, of Virginia Beach, was the overall winner in 18:01. He was followed closely by Bob Bacon, 33, of Skippack, Pa., in 18:22. 

Erin Taylor, 39, of Raleigh, N.C., was third overall and first woman in 18:53. Katie Latimer, wife of winner Matt, was second female in 19:46. Bethany Killmon Wright was third in 21:00. 

There were a number of Cape Henlopen hockey alumni in the race, including Nikki Rhoades, 23:33; Darby Klopp, 24:23; Dom Scott, 24:33; LeeLee Wilson, 24:54; Riley Klopp, 25:08; and Abby Kane, 27:08.

Mike Sewell was male masters winner on his 52nd birthday with a time of 19:14. Lori Holdswoth, 60, was the women’s masters winner in 23:45.

Joann Szczepkowski, 75, holder of numerous age-group state records at various distances, won the 70-79 age group in 28:54. That may be a new state record. 

Tom Keating, 73, of Millsboro, won his age group in 28:58. Debbie Blair, 62, of Lewes won her age group in 24:40, just ahead of Karen Dawson in 24:45.   

A quick trio of veteran locals raced post to paddock in the 60-69 age group won by Bill Holdsworth in 21:36 over Brian Johnston in 22:08 and Rick Poppleton in 22:19. 

Bryan Mack, 31, a former Cape soccer guy, ran to a time of 18:58. Micah Sklut, 42, another former Cape soccer player, ran 23:28.
