Sohonage joins Rehoboth Beach Dental

August 23, 2016

Dr. John Sohonage, D.D.S., has joined the Rehoboth Beach Dental Practice with Dr. Curtis Leciejewski, D.D.S.

Sohonage earned his bachelor of science degree in biology from Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1988. He then went on to West Virginia University School of Dentistry, earning his DDS in 1992. Upon finishing dental school, he entered a year-long general practice residency at WVU/Ruby Memorial Hospital. During this extended training, he applied for a commission as an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service in the branch of the Indian Health Service. Upon completing his residency, he accepted his first position working with Native Americans on the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona.

This was the start of Dr. Sohonage's passion for public health dentistry and working with underserved populations. Having dreamt of seeing Alaska for many years, he then spent the next 18 working with various native communities from the lnupiat Eskimos in the northwest arctic region to the Tlingit and Haida Indians of southeast Alaska.

He held various positions including coordinator of the Mt. Edgecumb hospital dental operating room program, dental director of both Mt. Edgecumb hospital and the Juneau Dental Director. Sohonage, also acted as the AEGD Residency Director for the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium from 2006-10, providing advanced training to new dental school graduates.

In 2012, Dr. Sohonage returned to the East Coast to spend more time with his family, accepting a position at La Red Health Center in Georgetown. There he continued providing services to underserved populations in southern Delaware until 2016.

Dr. Sohonage enjoys staying busy and has many hobbies, including woodworking, cooking and reading. He loves travel and experiencing different cultures. This has translated into experimenting with many different cuisines. He also feels strongly about staying active and may be found out running or biking the local trails.

Though vastly different from Alaska, the Eastern Shore has quickly become home for Sohonage. The "shore life" is a perfect match for him and his family. The warm welcome received here and the wonderful people of southern Delaware made his transition easy. He looks forward to continuing to provide oral health care to members of this community.
