Need to get outside and get some exercise? Save Our Lakes Alliance 3 announced March 27 it will award one or more cost-sharing grants this year through its Lakes Improvement Matching Grants program.

The grants competition is open to individual homeowners, homeowner associations, or groups of two or more homeowners working together. Properties bordering the lakes, and beyond, are eligible. Upon successful completion of an awarded project, SOLA3 will reimburse 50 percent of documented out-of-pocket costs, up to $3,000.

Project examples include replacing phragmites with native plants to control erosion, installing a shoreline riparian buffer, creating a rain garden to filter stormwaters and control runoff, or installing pervious surfaces. Smaller scale projects are also welcome - for example, a simple project costing $500 could be eligible for a $250 SOLA3 grant. More examples are available at SOLA3.org.

Guidelines, deadline dates, and an application form are available for download at SOLA3.org. Applications must be received by Thursday, Sept. 30. All improvements covered by the award must be completed by Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020.

Founded in 2004, SOLA3 is the only nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to restoring, protecting, and maintaining the three freshwater lakes in the Rehoboth Beach area - Silver Lake, Lake Comegys, and Lake Gerar.
