Some 10,000 Catholic school students head back to school

August 25, 2015

For most of the Diocese of Wilmington’s approximately 10,000 Catholic elementary and secondary school students, Aug. 25 was back-to-school day.

“This is an exciting year in Catholic schools as we welcome Pope Francis to the United States, to celebrate the 185th anniversary of Catholic education in the Diocese of Wilmington, and anticipate the expansion of 1:1 technology (already a staple in our high schools) to our middle schools,” said Dr. Lou DeAngelo, superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington. “Since 1830, Catholic schools in Delaware have been nurturing the intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical development of each child placed in our care. We are proud to continue that magnificent tradition today.”

For 185 years, Catholic schools have been serving the needs of area families by offering a Christ-centered educational alternative. There are currently 30 Catholic schools in the diocese. The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington was established in 1868 and is home to 57 parishes, and 18 missions in the state of Delaware and the nine counties of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. There are over 240,000 Catholics in the diocese.
