New members welcome; reserve seat by Sept. 12
September 2, 2023

The South Coastal Delaware Chapter 5226 of AARP will resume activities including monthly meetings beginning at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club, Dagsboro.

Monthly luncheons include speakers on a variety of topics of interest to members. The speaker for the Sept. 19 meeting will be June Gruenbaum, president of the Sussex Preservation Coalition, a group interested in preserving and protecting the land and resources of the county.

In October, the chapter will welcome a team of providers from Beebe Healthcare to speak about strokes and their treatment.

In addition to monthly meetings, members perform community service activities including blood drives and food collection for local pantries; sponsor day trips and overnight tours; support legislative efforts to benefit older citizens; support and sing with a performing choral group; and raise scholarship money. The main fundraiser for the scholarship committee, an annual artisans fair, is held each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View.

A June 2024 trip is planned to St. Augustine, Fla., as well as a Christmas in the Smokies trip in November 2024. Also planned are trips to the Philadelphia Flower Show, the Air Mobility Show at John Dickinson Plantation, the Castles of New York and the Chester River Fall Foliage.

Memberships are available for everyone interested for $15, with the requirement to join the national AARP organization. For more information, call Kay Houston at 302-732-6977. To make a reservation to attend the Sept. 19 luncheon, call Mary Ann Dougherty at 302-541-9412 by Monday, Sept. 12.
