Southern Delaware Chorale selects Lee Mitchell Scholarship winners

July 25, 2015

The Southern Delaware Chorale has selected high school students Amber Davis, Molly Fulton and Lauren Mahetta as recipients of the Lee Mitchell Scholarship for the 2015-16 school year.

Each year the chorale selects students from Sussex County high schools who audition for the scholarship program. The program provides a $1,000 scholarship for voice lessons, membership in the Southern Delaware Chorale, music and performance attire. The recipients will sing with the chorale throughout the 2015-16 season and are provided opportunities to showcase their talents by performing solos during the concerts.

Davis will be a senior this school year at Milford High School. She has been actively involved in singing since a very young age. She is involved in both the music and drama departments at Milford and sings soprano in the concert choir as well as the more challenging chamber choir. In the past year she performed the lead in the high school’s musical "Shrek."

Fulton will be a senior this year at Milford High School. She started singing in her church choir at the age of 11, and in school chorus at 13 years of age. Fulton sings soprano in the Milford High School Chorus and has participated in Delaware All-State Choir since eighth grade.

Mahetta will be a junior this year at Sussex Tech High School. She sings alto in the school’s concert choir Bella Voce and chamber ensemble. She has participated in the Delaware All-State Choir for the past four years, and has been in every school musical since fourth grade.

All three scholarship winners will be joining the Southern Delaware Chorale when rehearsals begin Tuesday,  Sept. 1, for the first concert performance to be held Sunday, Nov. 1. Other performances include a Messiah/Christmas Carol Sing-Along Sunday, Dec. 13, and a spring concert Sunday, April 24, 2016. The spring concert will be a collaborative effort with several of the high schools in the area.

The Lee Mitchell Scholarship program was made possible by an endowment from the family of the late Lee Mitchell, internationally renowned pianist and composer. The scholarship award was initiated to advance the cause of music and arts among high school students. Through fundraising efforts and contributions, the chorale was able to offer three scholarships this year.
