Space shuttle astronaut Mike Mullane to appear at Lewes library Aug. 9

August 5, 2019

Space Shuttle astronaut and retired Air Force Col. Mike Mullane will participate in the Lewes Public Library's summer-long program A Universe of Stories, celebrating space exploration on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

Mullane will appear at three separate events Friday, Aug. 9, at the Lewes library.

At 2 p.m., Mullane will join a panel of local scientists, engineers, oceanographers and plant scientists for a kid-friendly Science Show and Tell question-and-answer session about space and science. The event is appropriate for older children and their families.

At 4 p.m., Mullane and that same team of local scientists and engineers will hold an Ask a Scientist panel for adults. This will be an adult question-and-answer session about space and science in general. The panelists will answer any and all audience questions about those scientific, engineering and technology questions they've often wondered about.

At 6 p.m., Mullane will present a talk titled Spaceflight Revealed.

He'll share NASA videos and photos to explain the reality of living and working in space. And he'll also answer some of the questions he is frequently asked, including those about faked moon landings and UFOs.

Mullane holds a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology, and he's also a graduate of the Air Force Flight Test Engineer School at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.. He was selected as a NASA astronaut mission specialist in 1978 in the first group of space shuttle astronauts.

He completed three space shuttle missions, one aboard Shuttle Discovery, August 1984; and two on Shuttle Atlantis, December 1988; and February, 1990 before retiring from NASA and the Air Force that same year. Mullane has been inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame. He now lives in Albuquerque, N.M.

Before and after the panel, Browseabout Books will have copies for sale of Mike Mullane’s memoir “Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut,” and his book for children, “Do Your Ears Pop in Space?” Mullane will sign copies as well.
