Speed cameras coming to Route 1, Minos Conaway work area

$20 ticket increases by each mile per hour over speed limit
October 7, 2025

A speed camera will go live Tuesday, Oct. 21, on southbound Route 1 north of Lewes in the Minos Conaway Road work zone, but fines won’t start immediately.

The first 21 days will be a warning period, officials said, with motorists incurring no violations. Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 11, registered vehicle owners receiving a first offense will receive a base violation of $20 and an additional amount added for each mile per hour over the posted work zone speed limit of 50-mph in accordance with Delaware law.

For example, officials said, if the captured violation occurs at a speed of 61 mph, the speed violation is $20 plus an additional $11, which accounts for $1 for each mile per hour over the 50-mph posted work zone speed limit. When added with other fees set forth in Delaware Code, the total will be $118. Second and subsequent offenses are higher. These violations are civil penalties only and no points will be assessed to driver's licenses.

Signs warning drivers of the speed camera will be placed on Route 1 south in advance of the work zone along with radar speed signs, officials said.

“Safety is a priority for DelDOT, especially in work zones where workers are most vulnerable,” said Secretary of Transportation Shanté Hastings. “Electronic speed enforcement in other work zones has reduced crashes and lowered average speeds. We expect similar results in the Route 1/Minos Conaway work zone which will be active for the next few years. Please remember to buckle up, slow down, pay attention and be patient.”

Speed cameras have also been deployed on I-95 in the area of the Route 896 interchange since July 2024, officials said, and speeds have been reduced by an average of 10% in both directions, and crashes reduced by 19%.
