St. Georges junior varsity Hawks down Cape 6-0

September 20, 2011

Take a Cape football fan, spin him around three times, then ask him to find the home field of the St. Georges Hawks. The first question will be "Where is St.Georges?" and the answer “St. Georges, Delaware“ will keep them in state but not get them to the sidelines.

But plenty of Hawks fans found Lewes and Legends Stadium Sept. 19 and they made some serious noise in support of their team.

St. Georges is a Tech school coached by J.D. Maull, who also has locals Kai Maull and Ronnie Burton on staff. Last year the Hawks were 8-2 then lost in the first round of the Division 2 state tournament to Delmar 22-16.

Last Monday the junior varsity Hawks came to Legends Stadium for a game and left with a hard-fought 6-0 victory, the lone touchdown coming on a 25-yard fourth-quarter run by sophomore Taron Hester.

“It's our home town, so being a Cape Henlopen graduate, athlete and native, a lot of coach George Glenn is in myself, the same with head coach J.D. Maull; he has a lot of George Glenn in him.We just run the power game, pound the rock, be smart and not make mistakes,” Kai Maull said.

“This game was a big deal for our kids, sort of a homecoming for me and coach Burton, and our kids came out and battled hard,” said J.D. Maull.

Sean Grogan of Cape laid down some licks from his safety position and also did a stellar job coming in to play quarterback for Jon Jon Warren, who went to wide receiver a couple of series in the second half.

Zach Stevenson ran the ball well in the first quarter before injuring a quad muscle, and Ricky Cannon made plays all over the field carrying the ball, running back punts and making tackles on defense.

Cape's best chance to score came late in the second quarter when Tony Hazzard went high to snag a Jon Warren pass at the 10-yard line. Two plays later Hazzard just missed corralling a pass in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.

“We are looking for guys who can play on Friday night and also want to get players game experience,” coach Bill Collick said of his junior varsity program.
