Stamp Out Hunger set May 10

May 6, 2025

I ask the readers of the Cape Gazette to help their local post offices help those of our neighbors in need of nonperishable food this coming season.

The 33rd annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will be hosted locally Saturday, May 10, by the Sussex County post offices. This is the largest single-day food drive in the United States. It is also the largest all-volunteer, one-day effort for the benefit of area food pantries. All food collected by your local carriers remains in and benefits this area. This food drive helps restock area food pantries as they prepare for summer needs. This year’s drive is more important than ever because area food banks that formerly received federal subsidies, such as the Delaware Food Bank no longer receive those subsidies. It is estimated that more than 45 million Americans experience food insecurity; many of them in our area, they are our neighbors.

On May 10, your postal carrier will pick up nonperishable items that you place by your mailbox before that pick-up. Many of you will have received bags for that purpose, but those bags are not required.

Your United States Postal Service carriers volunteer their time to collect and distribute to area food banks nonperishable food goods needed to restock those food banks, most of which have depleted their winter supplies.
