State arts grant to fund young musicians showcase series

September 20, 2025

The Delaware Division of the Arts awarded a $5,059 grant to Paul Kares, a nonprofit supporting children in the culinary and musical arts, to launch its young musicians showcase series.

The six-concert series will debut at The Room at Cedar Grove in Lewes, a venue managed by Paul Kares.  Each showcase will feature student performers, with participants drawn from local schools, music programs and community referrals.

“We are so grateful for this grant so that we can kick off the young musicians showcase,” said Fran Simeone, director of development. “This program will allow musicians to perform before a live audience.”

Founded by businessman Jim Rivette and Paul Cullen, the nonprofit equips aspiring artists with the training and tools to pursue careers in the arts.

“Many children and young adults have a dream of pursuing a musical career, but they lack opportunities to connect with industry professionals,” Rivette said. “This project provides that platform. We encourage their family, friends, and the entire community to come to the events and show their support.”

The events are also valuable networking opportunities. Cullen, who toured with Bad Company, will introduce students to established musicians, including Tony Sciuto (formerly of the Little River Band) and Keith Mack, who has performed with Patty Smyth, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper and Melody Trucks.

“Being mentored by seasoned pros will help young musicians handle the realities of a musical career,” Cullen said. “It’s not just about performing. It’s a business.”
