Stevens named Sussex Academy Teacher of the Year
in a surprise announcement made just before spring break, high school math teacher Megan Stevens found out she was named the 2026 Sussex Academy Teacher of the Year.
Stevens, who joined Sussex Academy in 2022, said she was shocked and humbled by the honor.
“I just love what I do, and to be recognized for that is really special,” she said.
Head of School Kyle Bentley said Sussex Academy was proud to nominate Stevens for the Delaware Charter Schools Network Teacher of the Year award.
“I have been consistently impressed by her leadership, her teaching in the classroom, and her understanding of the importance of building strong relationships throughout the school,” Bentley said. “She is an excellent example of the high-quality educators at our school.”
Currently the math department coordinator, Stevens previously taught geometry and algebra in central Florida for 11 years before moving to Delaware. Changing students’ perception of math is a career highlight, she said.
“Math doesn’t tend to be a student’s favorite subject, but I love to break that barrier, and really try and explain the content on a student level and allow students to see the content for what it is,” she said. “I love when the lightbulb goes off for students and they get just as excited as I do when they are understanding the content.”
Stevens earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education mathematics from Kutztown University, and her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University.
Her husband Sam is a teacher in the Woodbridge School District, where her youngest child Keegan attends daycare. Her two older children, Lucas and Cooper, attend Sussex Academy elementary school.
Next, Stevens will compete against other charter school teachers of the year for the Delaware Charter Schools Network Teacher of the Year award. The winner will then compete against each public school district teacher of the year for the state honor.
Stevens succeeds her coworker Stephanie Sherman, who served as both the 2024 Sussex Academy and DCSN Teacher of the Year.
