Stirring Up Support For Prohibition In 1917

Pro-prohibition organizations distributed this postcard in Wilmington before the November election of 1917 to stir up support for a referendum in Wilmington against the sale and manufacture of alcoholic beverages in Delaware. The Anti-Saloon League was one of the organizations fighting for Prohibition. Kent and Sussex counties, by local referendum, had already approved Prohibition in 1907, according to alcoholproblemsandsolutions.org, and were followed by New Castle County. Wilmington was the last holdout and remained wet until 1920. The U.S. Congress approved Prohibition in January of 1918 and it was ratified by all the states, including Delaware, by January of 1920 when it went into effect nationwide. Prohibition lasted for 13 years until it was repealed by another amendment of the U.S. Constitution in 1933.
