StoryWalk kicks off at downtown Lewes businesses

December 1, 2018

The Lewes Public Library and several downtown Lewes businesses have teamed up to bring a StoryWalk to downtown Lewes this holiday season. A StoryWalk is a fun way for children - and adults - to read a book while also enjoying the outdoors. The pages of Caralyn Buehner’s “Snowmen at Night” have been installed in 14 downtown Lewes storefront windows, where visitors will be able to read them while walking through the business district.

Lewes Public Library installed its first StoryWalk in Stango Park in the beginning of the summer, in partnership with Lewes in Bloom. “It was so well received, we decided to do a second one in July, and immediately started thinking about what we could do downtown during the holiday season,” says Children’s Librarian Jen Noonan. With the help of Betsy Reamer at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, Lewes Public Library board member Lou Braithwaite approached businesses to host the posters for the duration of the holidays. “Everyone we asked said, ‘Yes,’” says Braithwaite. “The enthusiasm for the project was unanimous.”

The StoryWalk begins at PUZZLES on Front Street, and ends at Kids’ Ketch on Second Street. Other participating businesses are: Lewes Gourmet, Vintage Underground, biblion, Citizens Bank, P.U.P.S. of Lewes, Blooming Boutique, Fairy Godmother, Touch of Italy, Jerry’s Seafood, Aquamarine, Treasures, and Lewes Gifts.

Visitors can pick up a map at Lewes Public Library, The Lewes Chamber of Commerce, or from the brochure box outside PUZZLES before they start the StoryWalk. A scavenger hunt accompanies the map, and visitors are encouraged to play along while they read the book, and submit their hunt to the brochure box outside Kids’ Ketch at the end of the walk. The scavenger hunts collected will be automatically entered in a drawing for a Lewes Library Prize Pack, which includes a book bag, a lanyard (to hold a library card), and a $5 gift certificate to the Just Between Friends Book Shop, located in the Lewes Public Library.

“We’re so excited to bring this fun, family-friendly activity to downtown Lewes, and we’re hoping it can become a yearly holiday tradition,” says Noonan.

The Lewes Public Library Winter StoryWalk will be downtown for visitors to enjoy until Jan. 3. For more information, contact Lewes Public Library at 302-645-2733.
