Strong showing for Seahawks at Ugly Duckling Invitational
The Ugly Duckling High School and Middle School Invitational was held Oct. 11, at Killens Pond, giving many teams an early look at this year’s DIAA state championship course.
The Sussex Academy girls finished second to Ursuline Academy. A total of 14 teams took part in the meet. Junior Riley Moriarty finished fifth in 21:25, while freshman Jordan Blades finished 11th in 22:11, junior Jaslene Brunskill was 12th in 22:18, senior Katya Geyer was 15th in 22:39 and sophomore Taegen Forester was 16th in 22:50.
On the boys’ side, it was all senior Ryan Moody, who hit the line in 16:14 to hold off a tough runner in Kevin Howard of Middletown, who ran 16:17. Younger brother Ben Moody, a sophomore, was 11th in 17:35, eighth-grader Seth Moore was 14th in 17:49, senior Will Parker was 17th in 17:57 and senior Aiden Zook was 41st in 19:38. The Sussex Academy boys finished third in the team race, while CR was second and Odessa High School won the meet.

Middle school wrap
The Sussex Academy boys came into Lewes on the 3K course around the Cape campus and topped Beacon by a close 26-31 score. A close race up front had both tough athletes leaning at the tape, as Sussex Academy’s Kai Mundok was awarded the win by one-tenth of a second in 11:56.0 to Thomas Bonk of Beacon, timed in 11:56.1. Sussex Academy put six in the top 10, while Beacon had the other four.
Beacon’s girls stayed unbeaten at 5-0 with a 19-42 victory over Sussex Academy. They were led by Emily Hilton in a time of 12:13. Beacon grabbed the next two spots for the 1-2-3 sweep, as Elle Stretch was second in 12:59 and Brielle Antos was third in 13:02. Garrity Cox led Sussex Academy in fourth place in 13:14.
Striders race time trial
The youth Seashore Striders raced a 2K course Oct. 14, at Cape, with 10-year-old Preston Dunne winning the boys’ race in 7:52, while 10-year-old Manning Bean won the girls’ race in 8:13.
The top five boys following Dunne were Nolan Peet in 8:21, Dane Cawthern in 8:49, Sam Capriolo in 9:16 and Jameson Lagonigro in 9:19.
Following Bean for the girls were Lillian Peet in 8:17, Chloe Cawthern in 8:48, Fiona Dunne in 9:33 and Cece Kroc in 9:46.
Finish chute
The big high school meet this week is the Joe O’Neill Invitational Friday, Oct. 17, at fast Bellevue State Park. Most Delaware teams will attend. As of now, 43 teams are scheduled to be on the line. Look for Cape’s Jason Baker to be in the low 15 range and compete for the individual title.
A total of 278 people took part in the Ashley Furio 5K Oct. 11, as the sky opened up halfway through the race, drenching the field.
Have you ever raced through a farm? The Lace Up for Ag Literacy 5K will be held at Hopkins Farm this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. If you have not seen all the positive changes that have been done at Hopkins, come on out and support the event, and take a look at the new Hopkins Farm.
Strider Jen Ward will tackle the Atlantic City Marathon this weekend, while Mardiny Ung recently completed the Hartford Marathon, running 4:06:55 to finish sixth in her age group. A total of 1,900 completed the marathon and 3,700 completed the half.
Rehoboth Beach runner Paul Timmons ran the Chicago Marathon in 3:43:30 and hit the halfway mark in 1:52:27. That means Paul ran a negative second half in an impressive 1:51:03. Tanya Karaman of Smyrna ran a 4:01:16.
Come out and support the Sussex County runners Wednesday, Oct. 22, as the Sussex County Cross Country Championships will be held at Sandhill Fields with 10 teams competing.
