Styles and Silver Fox Fields has nice alliteration

October 11, 2022

Styles and Silver Fox Fields - The Cape Henlopen campus now has two ball fields named after local legends of the game. Last Saturday, the softball field was  dedicated and consecrated Bill Cordrey Field. Cordrey joins Chris Short Field as the only Cape venues named after a person. Chris Short was nicknamed Styles, born in Milford, raised in Georgetown and pitched for Lewes High. Short pitched for the Phillies and Brewers with a 135-132 record. Cordrey graduated from Milton High in 1966, a fearsome four-sport athlete, who once scored 57 points in a basketball game before the three-point shot. Cordrey coached Cape softball for 15 years, with a state finals appearance in 2004, when the Vikings lost to Caravel 1-0. A complete story of the Bill Cordrey Field dedication will appear in the Friday edition of the Cape Gazette.

Caboose is loose - Delmar is known for railroading history - and field hockey - and is home to a unique highball signal and caboose located on Route 54 in a small park near the railroad tracks. Visiting Vikings fans along the fence, knowledge of local history always involves the same two words - “liquor store.” That whistle was blowing on and off the entire game last Friday night and I couldn’t tell you if the Delmarva Central still runs or if they are ghost trains. Coach Jodi Hollamon said,”it’s an actual train rattled the house when we lived in town.” Bob Dylan: “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.” The game was close 21-14, Cape ahead, with four minutes left in the third quarter. Then like a bullet train, Cape was gone for a 42-21 victory. You don’t hear the whistle of the train you're riding.

Personal Phillies Fervor - Studio host NBC Sports Channel 29 Michael Barkann had a great quip while watching the Phillies locker room celebration after eliminating the Cardinals. “I’m waiting for Nick Castellanos to take a hit off that champagne bottle. It will be the first hit he’s had the entire series.” Barkann has a degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University's prestigious Newhouse School of Communications, which produced Bob Costas, Dick Stockton, Len Berman and Mike Tirico. Barkann's charitable work includes the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia. A native of East Brunswick, he is what happens when you put Jersey and Philly in the same blender.

This is my house! This is my time, this is my house, this is my day, any place I hang my hat is home. Three of four baseball wild card series were won by the visiting team, including the Phillies over the Cardinals, Padres over Mets and Mariners over Blue Jays. Only the Cleveland Guardians protected home field, eliminating the Tampa Bay Rays. Major league ball players aren't susceptible to friendly or unfriendly confines of ballparks; in fact, when things are not going well at home most dogs will work the walk.

Homecoming - Who comes home for Homecoming? Who goes to the parade, watches halftime coronations then shows up for the Saturday night dance? People who are already home, the people who live here, and if you're out of high school and still go to the dance and you’re not a chaperone, you may not be a Texas Ranger, but you’re a Strange Ranger. Cape football plays at Caesar Rodney Friday night. In years past they have combined the Homecoming parade with a Halloween parade. One year I unintentionally inserted myself into the parade. The crowd along the sidewalk were pointing and saying nice costume. It was a nightmare only trumped by the game.

Showhorse- Tim Bamforth brought Paradise Grill worker Mindy Cox over to meet me before last Sunday’s race.”Her dad used to run Striders races, his name was Gene Schneider.”  I told her, if anyone would remember him it would be you because you remember everything. Mindy said, “my dad would be over 100 if he were alive today.” I asked her, “how old was he when he died?” Mindy said, “93.” I physically rolled my head around saying, “if he’s in there, I will shake him loose.” I asked, “was he slightly built, trim and fit, nattily dressed with an engaging and gracious personality.” Mindy said, “Yes, that’s him. I loved my dad so much and miss him everyday.” I told her a story. “At the Dam Mill 5K race in Millsboro, a man on a cane, there to watch his wife run, pointed to a quarter on the ground and asked Gene, “would you pick that up for me?” I cried foul. “The rule of the road is you have to pick it up yourself.” Gene picked it up effortlessly, handed it to the man and smiled, “The funny part is I’m 90 years old.”

Snippets- Noelle Sabbagh scored the winning goal as Delaware field hockey won at William and Mary 3-2 Oct. 7. Mackenzie Brown of Cape on a weekend visit with her family was there to catch the “Noelle magic.”Don’t forget Darby Dash on Sunday October 16 at Cape State Park  Are there any homegrown Dallas citizens who are Eagles fans? And so why in the rodeo are there so many Cowboys in Sussex County? Just a mystery. Sunday night Dallas 4-1 at Philly 5-0. Draftkings sports book has the Eagles as five-point favorites, which proves Eagles fan trip hard and are throwing money at the game.  You see how many caught the bloodshot eyes  flight to Glendale, Ariz., last Sunday. Go on now, git!
