Summer camp at Conley’s Church to start June 20

June 6, 2022

Attendees at a recent meeting of Conley’s United Women in Faith heard from Craig Warrington, homeless liaison from the Cape Henlopen School District. His presentation touched the hearts of church members who had been praying for a way to help those in need.

The idea for Conley’s Camp was born when Warrington met with Pastor Bill Davis, Youth Ministries Director Jay Bachman and Camp Coordinator Karen Lessey. During the meeting, the idea became a plan for Conley’s Church to host a free summer camp for up to 14 Cape Henlopen School District children entering second to fifth grades whose families are experiencing housing issues.

For two days per week from Monday, June 20 to Thursday, Aug. 25, the camp will offer playground activities, arts and crafts, and a healthy breakfast and lunch at the church complex on Jolyns Way.  One day a week there will be field trips to destinations such as the Nanticoke Indian Museum, the Salisbury Zoo, DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum and several state parks.

The church is currently gathering materials and funding for the camp. Counselors have been interviewed. Church members will assist as volunteers and drivers as needed. Conley’s Church will strictly follow Safe Sanctuary practices to assure the safety and well-being of the young campers.

Future plans include an after-school program and an expanded camp for summer 2023. To volunteer or learn more, call Karen Lessey at 302-448-9924, or the Conley’s Church office at 302-945-1881, email ConleysUMC@gmail.com or go to ConleysUMC.org.
