The following letter was sent to Sussex County Councilwoman Jane Greuenbaum with a copy provided to the Cape Gazette for publication.
I am writing to state my full support of your Sept. 16 proposal that county council adopt a time-limited, targeted pause on building development in Sussex. This prudent, well-considered proposal, which I assume principally targets development in the state-designated Levels 3 and 4 areas of the county, would allow council to consider the 20 recommendations submitted by the Sussex County Land-Use Reform Working Group. I also want to advise you that I fully endorse this group's 20 recommendations for adoption by council.
In addition, at this point in time, I want to express my total objection to the Cool Spring Crossing development proposal for 1,922 residential units and commercial sites on 637 acres in the state-designated Level 4 area. Given the intolerable level of traffic congestion that currently exists, the existing overwhelming demand on Sussex County's support services – e.g. schools, EMT, fire department personnel, etc. – it would be completely irresponsible for council to consider approving the Cool Spring Crossing development, especially since the state has clearly stated it has no intention of investing resources in this Level 4 area for the foreseeable future.
I want to thank you most sincerely for your commitment and leadership in your efforts to serve the needs of all Sussex County residents.
